METHUEN, MA – Mayor D.J. Beauregard is pleased to announce that the City of Methuen’s Community Choice Power Supply Program, launched in December 2024, has already delivered significant savings to local residents and businesses. In just its first month, the program generated a total cumulative savings of $323,462 for participating electricity customers.

Residential households saw an average monthly savings of $20.85 per bill, offering much-needed financial relief amid rising energy costs. In December, 12,995 residential households and 1,366 commercial and industrial accounts took advantage of the program, with 77% of all electricity meter accounts in Methuen now enrolled.

“The early success of Methuen’s aggregation program demonstrates the power of collective purchasing to secure lower electricity supply rates for our residents and businesses,” said Mayor Beauregard. “These savings make a real difference, and we encourage more residents to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Methuen’s aggregation program was created to provide stable, competitive electricity rates, offering a cost-effective alternative to standard utility supply options. Participants continue to receive electricity through National Grid’s distribution network with no interruption in service while benefiting from the program’s lower negotiated supply rate.

Through a competitive bidding process, the City of Methuen secured a 12.83 cents per kilowatt-hour supply rate from First Point Power, locking in this rate for 36 months, through December 2027. In contrast, National Grid’s Basic Service supply rate is adjusted every six months and is subject to short-term market fluctuations. When the new Methuen program launched, National Grid’s Basic Service rate was 16.055 cents per kilowatt-hour, dropping to 14.72 cents per kilowatt-hour in February. However, National Grid’s Basic Service rate will change again in the summer and is projected to increase for the August 2025 – January 2026 period.
