Curbside Mattress Recycling

Mattress Recycling Program - Methuen

Methuen Mattress Recycling Program

Under MassDEP regulations which took effect in Fall 2022, recycling of mattresses is required in all cities and towns. Effective statewide on Nov. 1, 2022, mattresses were added to the list of materials banned from solid waste disposal or transport for disposal. Methuen no longer picks up mattresses in trash pick-up but has set up a recycling program providing residents with multiple options for recycling of mattresses. In 2023, the first full year of Methuen’s mattress recycling, the City collected and recycled 1,865 mattresses and box springs.

How Can I Get Rid of My Old Mattress & Box Spring?

  • Methuen offers seniors (age 62 and older) free pickup of 4 bulk items per year. Mattresses and box springs are counted as bulk disposal items. Seniors can contact DPW for scheduling mattress pickup at 978-983-8545. DPW crews will pick up mattresses for transport to the mattress recycling drop-off container at Methuen Transfer Station.
  • Starting Spring 2024, the non-profit UTEC Inc., under the preferred vendor contract with the City of Methuen, is providing curbside pickup of mattresses and box springs. Items are hauled directly to UTEC’s facility in Lawrence for recycling processing. Residents, who are under age 62, can make payment and schedule pickup through the UTEC website at utecinc.org/mattress-recycling

Scroll down on the UTEC mattress recycling page, hit Methuen on the Community dropdown and make online payment. Cost is $40 for each mattress and $20 per box spring. UTEC is scheduling Methuen resident curbside pickup orders every other Wednesday.
  • Methuen residents can also bring mattresses to the Mattress Drop-off Area at the Transfer Station at 50 Huntington Avenue. Annual sticker permit is required for Transfer Station access. Cost for drop off is $50 per mattress and $10 for box spring piece.
  • Finally…If you’re buying a replacement mattress, check with your mattress retailer. Many mattress sellers offering mattress delivery also provide service for pickup and disposal of the old mattress at no or low cost.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Mattresses to be disposed of for recycling must be kept dry, reasonably unsoiled and free of bedbugs.
