Methuen, MA – While no mosquitoes in Methuen have tested positive for West Nile Virus, a small number of mosquitoes in surrounding communities have recently tested positive. Out of an abundance of caution and in coordination with the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District (NEMMC), the City of Methuen will be conducting targeted mosquito control applications in high-traffic outdoor areas on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, between 8:00 pm and 12:00 am (with a rain date of Wednesday, August 20, 2025).

The following locations will be treated: Raymond J. Martin Riverside Park (Riverside Drive), Francis Morse Park (Burnham Road), Marsh Grammar School, Gill Avenue Playground, Tenney Grammar School, Nicholson Stadium, Timony Grammar School, Methuen High School, Comprehensive Grammar School, Veterans Memorial Park (Milk Street), Ashford Street Playground, Sargent School Field (West Ayer Street), Shorty DeGaspe Park (Mystic Street), Methuen Public Schools Administration Offices (9 Branch Street), Saint Ann’s Home and School, and the Neil Playstead (Lawrence Street).

 Two products will be used:

  • Suspend Polyzone (EPA Reg# 432-1514), a long-lasting barrier treatment effective for up to 90 days in controlling adult mosquitoes.
  • Zenivex E4-RTU (EPA Reg# 2724-807), a reduced-risk adulticide with no synergist additives, providing quick and effective mosquito knockdown.

Full product safety information can be found on the NEMMC website: https://www.nemassmosquito.org/public-education/pages/adulticide.

The application will be performed by a marked, mid-sized white NEMMC pickup truck driving slowly through the designated areas with yellow safety lights on. Residents and pets should remain indoors while the truck passes and may reopen windows 30 minutes afterward. Air conditioners may remain on during the application.

Mayor D.J. Beauregard emphasized the city’s proactive approach:

“We’re acting early to protect our residents and keep our outdoor spaces safe. These are preventive measures, and we’re working closely with our regional partners to get ahead of any risk.”
